Yeah, after our recent heated discussion regarding the future of cloud services, this caused me to laugh.

I was also highly amused by someone catching Dropbox's change in it's user agreement, saying they will comply with court orders to turn over your data.

Since Dropbox marketed security and encryption as a big part of it's service, the revelation that they can in fact decrypt your stuff and send it to someone else if they want just goes to prove the point that data security in the cloud is a bigger issue than folks would like to make it out to be. What a company says it can do, and what it can actually do may be two very different things.

All the folks that are high on the cloud need to get their heads out of the cloud and come back down to earth

When I read the article the recent discussion here on the cloud jumped right in to my head. Fact is - the cloud is not the "end all" that it is sometimes made out to be. With anything, you need to have backups/redundancy, both in house and in the cloud.

Yeah...boss wasn't too happy about this as we have some customer testing going on in the cloud ....but not anymore lol

I think you really need to have a service that is no dependent on 99.9999% uptime to make use of the cloud....but I don't think such a service yet exists.

I personally just find it amusing as all hell that this week has had major visible demonstrations of my biggest issues with the cloud - stability and information security.

I guarantee you that all the folks who were deployed solely on amazon's EC2 service at the start of the day will have some sort of failover option available with another provider shortly. Being completely down for such a long period of time, and not being able to do a damn thing about it is simply not acceptable for most companies. From what I'm understanding, this was a basic failure in capacity planning on Amazon's part. I can screw that up all by myself, don't need their help!

Have you guys also seen the report about one of the National Labs (that houses one of the largest super computers), being hacked as well. They claim no data was stolen, but in order to ensure that they cut their internet connection to ensure no outbound data....it's been cut since last friday!!

Did a research report on the ever so trendy marketing scheme cleverly titled "the cloud" I wasn't impressed with the PRO / CON ratio. Data security is a huge issue. I really just found this to be useful for small businesses with little capital.

What is so startling about this is that Amazon servers are very popular for good reason. This won't kill the cloud but it will make us all ask our cloud providers the tough questions about up time and security.

Amazon S3 has 99.99% uptime, which is less than one hour of downtime a year. So that's pretty good.

Not all websites and services that Amazon runs were down either. Only ones that were hosted in their VA datacenter.

We experienced this yesterday, we use notlong.com to shorten a URL that we give out to customers. Apparently the site is hosted on EC2.

Steam's connectivity with its gaming servers was down last night. I wonder if they are hosted on S3, or maybe it was just a coincidence.
