Did you have any experience before you dove into Route? I have been studying off and on for 4 months. I get bored of reading and begin to doze off so I start labbing...

not particularly, i just hit it hard, 3 hrs plus every day after work, etc

I feel if i spread it out over too big of a period that i lose some of that initial info that i learned

How would you compare the test to CCNA? Not in terms of content, but more in terms of structure of the exam. How many questions? What kind of questions, i.e. multiple choice, simulation, etc...

This question is best answered by reading the ROUTE syllabus at cisco.com. The OP could be in violation of the NDA by answering on the specifics of the exam.
