MS hell

It was a disappointing week; the bank IT job that I had been working up to all these years, the one that was the reward after paying my dues, the job I thought I would get out of sheer destiny... didn't even respond to my resume. That was through a recruiter as well.

After spending a few days to see what went wrong, there's an awful truth here; I don't have real enterprise level experience. All past jobs have been ~1000 users, ~300 servers. Now I'm stuck in a managed services role looking after disorganised medium-size clients because it was the only job I could get after 6x weeks of unemployment.

So I give up, applying for enterprise type jobs doesn't work. Recruiters (obviously) don't do anything. How do I get to that upper level of big business?

I'm assuming MS = Morgan Stanley? How long ago did you submit?

Don't be frustrated over things you have no control over. If your pursue the certs in your sig and (hopefully) obtain them, tangible proof of your hard work and knowledge will be on your resume. That is something you have control over!

You have a job right now and I understand it isn't ideal, but doesn't it at least allow you to bide your time waiting for a job to come open? You're not operating from desperation. Give it time and be persistent in your pursuit of knowledge, higher levels of responsibility, and higher pay. You will get where you are going.

I don't have any large scale experience to preach on but I can share some advise giving to me by one of the Dell Regional Project Managers.

Go to school and don't just get your degree, keep your GPA high as possible, when they go to look the first thing they sort is whom graduated Magna Cum Laude etc.

I myself don't know if Ill ever do college, but hope it helps give some perspective.

Managed Services. Sorry, guess it coulda been anything. This would be 5x submissions for enterprise roles over the past 2x months.

Biding time has gone on for too long and may now be running out of time for my goals. I narrowly missed out for the last position I interviewed for due to no experience in a large Wintel team (team of 12, instead of my usual 4). There aren't many opportunities here even though it's supposed to be a hot economy right now, so missing out might mean not seeing that bus again for awhile.

Schooling is totally off the radar, may have been a problem from the very start. Wasn't that a Leisuresuit Larry game?

My issue has been gone over alot in the form of making a jump from current role to that next level up. I'm really trying to find out if there is another way than mine which isn't working. I never would have thought a HR goon would be glancing/dumping my resume but the lack of responses from the big end of town is very conspicuous.

It may seem like it's taking a while but you need to keep at it and fire off your resume to as many roles (the ones you like of course) as possible. As far as your knowledge goes I know it is upto scratch, you are good. It could be certs that are keeping your resume from being picked from the pile. You should definitely get that VCP or perhaps a CCA. Maybe start working on an Exchange cert? I work for an MSP too and we are permanently based at the one client site. At the very least, you get exposed to different environments in your role. Keep at it, you'll get there. Maybe you want to post your resume here which we can dissect and hopefully give you some useful tips.

If it's banking and financial services you're looking at getting into, you should start into AS400 and other UNIX based systems.
