Odd Computer Problem

Ok, this one has had me scratching my head for a while.

I have a user that docks his Dell Latitude e6510 (Win7 32bit) on his desk while in office. We have it setup so that the network line from the wall connects to Cisco 7961 phone, then from the phone to the docking station. While the user is working, the PC will randomly lock up. When the system locks up, the Cisco phone on his desk restarts. The user has the same docking station in his home office (no Cisco Phone), and never locks up. He works from home 60% of the time. I removed the docking station and plugged in the keyboard, lan, mouse, and monitor directly into the PC for several days - no lockups. I swapped out the docking station with a brand new one I ordered from Dell (all the docking stations involved at are the Dell stations that are designed for that model), and within a few hours, lockups again (with a restarting phone).

any ideas?

have you cleaned the port on the laptop for the docking station ... ive seen staples ect get stuck in them.

also have you thought about running a line for the phone its self

Continue cycling through 'known-good' parts (while unlikely I know, stranger things have happened). New eth. cables, etc, culminating in maybe provisioning a new 7961?

Have you tried swapping the phone? Is the phone PoE? Maybe a power issue that's causing the problem.

Swap the keyboard and mouse? It's the only thing the same across the two docking stations. Unlikely I know but maybe...

I agree with this post. Usually this symbolizes some kind of PoE issue. I would also check the statistics on the phone to see if there's anything that pops out at you.

If you have managed switches, I would also take a look on the switch to see if that port is throwing any errors or dropped packets.

I'm going to agree with vCole and suggest trying to swap out the phone since the lockups only occur when the connection is going from the phone to the docking station.

Edit: Also, is he the only user that has his phone setup in this fashion? I would imagine if it was a PoE issue other users with the same configuration would be experiencing it as well, re-enforcing the idea that it may be an issue with that particular phone.

Thanks everyone. I will swap out his phone next week. All of our phone, access points, time card clocks all run off of the PoE. No other user has had this problem.

you could try resetting the phone and upgrading the firmware on it as well

is there anything in the switches log files that help? do you have port-security enabled?
