Virtualization
Virtual Disk Performance
sschmidlap
I want to run 4 virtual machines simultaneously. One is the domain controller consisting of 3 virtual disks. I run SQL 2005 and WSUS 3.0 and SCCM 2007 on this domain controller. The other 3 virtual machines are client computers with single disks.
I have four physical disks I can dedicate to these virtual machines. Do you think I would see better performance configuring the 4 physical disks as a RAID 0 array and running the VMs off that one volume (spread across the disks) or do you think I would see better performance by running each VM from a seperate, dedicated disk?

Best performance will be with RAID0, but risk of loosing everything is much higher. Consider using RAID5, or RAID10.
Performance will be better because one machine will not be limited to bandwidth of a single drive and will utilize all bandwidth of RAID0 if other three machines are not doing any I/O at the moment.
