Jobs in St Paul or Rochester MN?

N2ITN2IT Inactive Imported Users Posts: 7,483 ■■■■■■■■■■
My soon to be wife is graduating from nursing school. She has been in contact with a direct recruiter from the Mayo Clinic and looks to be on her way to taking a position there. This is in line with her life long dream, so I am having to move there with her IF she gets the job.

Anybody have first hand knowledge or experience with the job market for IT or IT Management up there? I'm a little nervous to be honest, I just took my new job about 4 months ago and I could potentially be having to move in 3 months.

Any information would be really appreciated.

Kind regards,
N2

Also in the area. I don't have any jobs off the top of my head, but I could get you in touch with a recruiter who I found to be very valuable. Let me know if you're interested.

I am from the Twin Cities. You cant really live in St Paul and work in Rochester or vice versa unless you enjoy driving 1.5 hours not including traffic. If you wife moves to Rochester to work you will need to find a job in Rochester. There isn't much out side of Rochester until you get to the Twin Cities.

The plus side is Rochester is a decent size town and you shouldnt have problems finding a job. You probably could even get a job at the Mayo clinic if that interests you.

I'm from a suburb of Minneapolis. I've had the hardest time finding work. Few interviews but nothing to serious. Most places I've ran into want tons of experience or they do the new thing "No experience needed! We train! ... Oh sorry we decided to go with someone with experience for this position"

I also live in the Twin Cities, although not quite as advanced as the Topic Starter is in experience (I'm looking for entry level help desk/desktop support/technical support positions). I've applied to over 70 jobs in the past 2-3 weeks, had 2 interviews, but nothing. I'm studying the MCTS 70-680 exam, since there are many companies that want a Microsoft certification.

Here is a pretty good list of major corporations in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area: List of companies based in Minneapolis-Saint Paul - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As far as Rochester you would be best to look at the Mayo clinic itself or I think IBM still has a presense there. As someone said earlier that is quite a drive from the Cities.

Found this listing on the Mayo's website under minnesota jobs.

Rochester IT Systems SQL DBA Job - MN, 55901

Not sure if this something you want to do but the money looks good.

    I’m from Minnesota too.

I have been on several interviews and this is exactly how I feel!! This is an entry level role, but you have no experience, so we went with the guy that has 5 years of experience and a BA degree. Most jobs that I have run into have a job description that will say the following things..

“This is an entry level position, but it does require 2 years of experience. “

“We will train, but prefer someone with experience”

“This is a contract job that may turn into contract to hire”

It’s just so frustrating looking for an IT job in MN. I’m not sure what the trick is to getting a help desk job. I hope I can find an IT job before the summer is over.

I'm about an hour north of the Twin Cities. I think you should have no problem finding a job. I constantly see listings from in and around the cities, but rarely north of Rogers/Monticello. Nearly all of the guys I talk to around here say that the jobs around St. Cloud don't pay squat and that you need to go to the cities to make the dough.

    Hello, N2IT
I would say it’s tough to find something in Rochester, MN. My experience has been that a lot of the jobs in MN are located in Bloomington, Burnsville, Edina, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, and Downtown Minneapolis. However, there are those companies sprinkled throughout mn that are always looking for IT professionals. I have listed some resources below for you to use good luck:

NetworkingStudent, I noticed we have similar qualifications. Are there other certs that you plan on working on? Do you plan on getting your bachelors? Also, what route do you want to take as far as IT goes?

My wife is from Rogers; in fact we just spent a quick weekend there with her family. I hate to say it but MSP is not known for its entry level positions. I could probably get a job there with decent pay but I couldn't when I was decidedly entry level. I can tell you right now it will be easier to get an entry level job in Denver or Phoenix then it will be to get one anywhere in Minneapolis.

I guess I never really looked for entry level jobs, so it's hard for me to say how the market is for them around here. I think the OP was looking for something a little more than entry level? He mentioned IT management.

I was responding to one of the other posters who was complaining about entry level positions requiring 2 years of job experience in MSP. I was just relating that I have been to that little town of Rogers!

    Hello, CenturionMario

Currently, I’m working on the Windows 7 70-680 certification. I would like to pursue the Windows 7 70-685 and 70-686 certifications later on during the year. I want to get my bachelors, but I want to find a job in IT first. I’m looking for a help desk or support job. Eventually I would like to get into system administration or networking.
