Just received this bit of information. Curious to see what comes of the acquisition.
Today VMware announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Shavlik Technologies, a leading provider of easy-to-use, effective cloud-based IT management solutions for small and medium businesses (SMBs). With this acquisition, VMware will leverage Shavlik's expertise in SMB IT to provide broader and more compelling cloud-based capabilities to manage, monitor and secure physical and virtual environments. With simple and affordable cloud-based offerings, VMware empowers SMBs to focus on running the business rather than worry about IT.

Today's announcement builds upon the successful relationship built between VMware and Shavlik via VMware GO™, a joint SaaS offering assisting SMBs with rapid deployment and management of VMware vSphere®. In addition, Shavlik's on-premise solutions provide comprehensive IT Management, Compliance Management and Security options for customers wanting to deploy this solution behind their own firewall.

On behalf of VMware, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to VMware and look forward to working with you. Whether you are new to VMware or a long time customer, we value your business and want to provide an update on what to expect now that Shavlik's products and expertise have transferred to VMware.

VMware and Shavlik have proven track records in delivering easy-to-use, cost effective IT solutions that enable hundreds of thousands of SMBs to take advantage of modern, transformative IT models like virtualization and cloud computing, without requiring the skill and staff resources of larger enterprises. Together, the two companies will build upon this success with a complete portfolio for managing, monitoring and securing IT environments, offering SMBs:
• Centralized IT Management Services - Enabling SMBs to manage core IT functions through a single pane of glass, centralizing asset management, security, business continuity and data protection capabilities
• Simplified Deployment and Automation - Enables SMBs to rapidly evolve existing systems to virtual and cloud models without requiring significant in-house skills or resources
• Automated IT Management - Delivering efficiency and automation to SMBs for core IT management functions, including patch management, compliance, configuration and more
VMware is committed to providing you with continuity and investment protection including smooth upgrade paths to greater functionality and access to high quality services. We intend to accelerate innovation related to these critical offerings, and collaborate with you to continue to deliver value for your investment. You will continue to be supported by the Shavlik Technologies sales and support personnel as you are today.

We look forward to serving you and enabling your journey to a dramatically simplified approach to managing IT as part of the VMware family. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Jason Tober, Vice President Sales and Business Development, at jason.tober@shavlik.com.

It's the new buzzword. VDI and Cloud computing have been the longest set of meetings for me the last few months. Until the CIO saw the cost to implement and what it would take to redo most of our infrastructure to accommodate it. Now the marching orders are to observe and monitor for another year.

Very interesting. Didn't Shavlik write the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer? Or they split off from that... they were involved with it in some form at least from what I can remember.

    Yes they did.
Shavlik's technological advancements have been significant enough to attract attention from Microsoft, resulting in cooperative efforts between the two companies and the development of the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA), which is based on Shavlik's HFNetChk (the acronym designating HotFix Network Checker) released in 2001. This technology is still used by an installed base of millions of users across the globe.

Besides MBSA, NetChk is also used for patching Windows in VMware Update Manager.
