odd wireless card issue

I recently got a wireless card that contains an Atheros AR9271 chipset. The issue that I observe is that it sometimes says that my network's signal strength is -10dBm though monitoring software (normally its in the -50 to -60 dBm range) and then it sometimes knocks me off. I don't know it it's just a driver issue or if it's just a bad chip (I looked on the Atheros website and apparently they don't offer driver downloads, I checked the card manufacturer's web site (Alfa) and they don't even have the product listed yet.)

UPATE:I'm also getting this error in event viewer around the same time I installed it:

Event id 10000
WLAN Extensibility Module has failed to start.
