Is this CBT video incorrect? (IP Reverse Engineering)

in CCNA & CCENT
Hi,
Does a gateway have to be on the same network to communicate with a PC?
Reason I ask this is that a CBT videos shows once you reverse engineering the PC ip address and note down the networks the
Gateway is on a network of 172.16.68.48-63
and the
PC is in a network range of 172.16.68.64-79
Both devices are on a different networks but same subnet.
The author says that the Gateway should have a ip ending with 49 to allow the pc to communicate.
I thought he would have said that the Gateway should have had a ip address of between 63-78 (one ip from the range) to communicate with the PC, as then it would have been on the same network.
Is the author correct?
Thanks
