Is it just me... I can't study in silence.

I don't know if it is just me. But I cannot concentrate when I'm studying in silence. For some reason I always study better with fast music playing. Like I'm doing QOS studies right now blasting Megadeth Hangar 18 and I'm actually able to better focus.

When everything is quiet around me I find myself getting distracted for some reason. Is it just me?

The only time I can study with noise is if it's music. Other than that, I can't concentrate when the dogs are barking, the birds chirping, or when the neighbors are getting groovy

Heh, Only kidding about that last part. I make it a point to study when everyone here is either at work or school and I'm home alone. That or I find a nice quiet spot in the back of the library.

Not sure, but I'm the opposite. I do my best studying at midnight+, in complete silence and with no distractions of external noise you get during the day: traffic, birds etc

I'm the opposite. Pretty much any other activity going on can distract me. Especially if someone is watching TV in the room because I start by just listening, and pretty soon I'm looking up and eventually just tossing the book aside to watch. I also enjoy the late night study, which is good since my day is pretty well sucked up with other things.

Music in the background helps. Sometimes i put something boring on TV and study with that. Another thing that helps is leaving the house and going to the library to get away with distractions.

I need silence when I am reading but it doesn't matter when it comes to going over notes, highlights or flashcards.

I'm the same way. I can't study if there's complete silence - I need some kind of music playing. Though, the TV or anyone talking and I'm completely distracted, which leads to the midnight-... study/cramfests.

Depends on the time of day. If it's in the morning then I don't need any background noise but I do in the evening, mostly music. I find that if the tv is on then I keep looking at it and getting distracted unless I'm not in front of it (the wife is watching her movies).

I need relative silence. Some light background noise is ok I guess but my ADD kicks in otherwise. I need complete silence and darkness when I sleep though.

Relaxation sounds to listen to, with headphones to mute out external sounds and to help you focus in your studies.

I use these when i want to read something in a pdf, that i want to concentrate on during work. Unfortunately i do not have my own office and I sit next to the help desk users, 10 feet away from me. So i hear EVERYTHING! but now i just pop on my headphones "Apple earbuds," put one of these youtube videos on in the background, and start to read my pdfs. It cancels out the chatter from the helpdesk and others nearby.

I need something in the background, instrumental or classical, else I find myself singing along and not focusing on the subject. The Starcraft 2 soundtrack works for me

No vocals (or intelligible vocals!) and it's got enough zing to keep me from falling asleep.

I can definitely relate to that; I've got some strange study habits myself.

I tend to differentiate information/chapters based on what's going on around me while studying. Something as simple as moving seats, changing TV shows, music or even changing drinks helps me to keep like concepts apart.

During class I'd always sit in the back, listen to music and surf the web. If I didn't the entire class would just blur together and I couldn't recall the information that was being taught very well.

Every once in a while I'm able to concentrate in silence and I take advantage of those times as much as possible. Most of the time I end up reading my textbooks cover-to-cover in one night and amazingly remember it all very well.

I typically listen to Home - Radio Rivendell - The Fantasy Radio Station which streams fantasy based music all the time.

I absolutely need music, it helps quiet the voices in my head (the ADHD ones

). Some Oldfield, William Orbit, Chillout or even my old C64 remix collection. Basically anything without vocals does the trick. Shoutcast / Groove Salad helped get me through my Lab.

Me too I'm a night person, my quality time of studying has been from midnight till 5:00 AM.
I do listen to music while studying but it can't be something loud

Just bought a pair of these hearing protectors:

Highly recommended. Esp. in a data center environment. Combination with ear buds if that's your thing. I do my best studying in absolute quiet with a pair of these and some caffeine on the brain.

I cannot learn if i do not have silence. I get some study time in the office but it is hard to concentrate, maybe that is because i always went to the library when i was in college.

Any noise makes it harder for me to study. I have to read twice a page to understand what it is saying.

That's because Marty Friedman is playing most of the solos. When Dave Mustaine has a go, it's pentatonics 101. He needs to stick to the bitchin' riffs.

For me, as long as there are no disruptions, the ambience doesn't matter. If I'm interested in what I'm studying, I can study.

Those are some hardcore cans. Expensive too. I personally use Sennheiser 595s. They are excellent when it comes to headphons.

I was a hardcore audiophile for about 10 years (that kinda changed with Wife Acceptance Factor), put almost all my spare cash into my audio system back in Ireland. Loved it...then had to hate leaving it back there. Sooo, I decided I wouldn't do that again in the states and built a system I can just throw in carry on luggage if I had to (EM1212m on the PC -> Perpetual Audio P1a/P3a - CIAudio VHP1 -> Grado RS1).
