Upgrade to 12.4 IOS

I'm looking at getting a 2600 router from Ebay, and it comes with 12.3.

What is the cost and and where does one go to get a copy of 12.4??
Or am I better off buying one that comes with 12.4?

Only the XM models for the 2600 support 12.4 and you have to have a valid Cisco account to download IOS.

To setup up an account, can I do it as an individual or does it need to go through a company??

It would be cheaper to buy a router with the appropriate IOS on it. Since the 2600s are EOL you wouldn't be able to cover them under SmartNet anyway.

If you're building a home lab you're better off getting at least one router (of each model you're planning to get) with MAX memory that has the latest and greatest version and biggest and baddest feature set that the router can support.

The oldest cheapest routers have been End of Life for years and years and years and you won't be able to get a SmartNet support contract for them. And as of January Cisco was reportedly planning to track and possibly limit downloads to images that you did have a smartnet contract for.
