Summarizing in labs/sims

I took a few practice test and I got a few labs in there pertaining to OSPF. The question was to add the networks to OSPF and test connectivity.

Let's say you have 172.16.1.0, .2.0, .3.0, through .7.0. My mind says to use 172.16.0.0 0.0.7.255. That would be the best answer to add the networks. But I got it wrong as they were looking for the generic 172.16.0.0 0.0.255.255.

How do you when you should summarize your networks or not in lab/sim questions?

Both ways work. I wouldn't say you got it wrong. If a lab asked you to only include those specific interfaces, and do it with one network command, the way you did it would be the right answer.

Keep in mind you aren't summarizing the advertisements with the network command, just being very specific about which interfaces are included in the OSPF process.
