MS Press 2nd Edition books with R2 content

Just a reminder that the Microsoft Press 2nd Edition books with R2 content are due to be available as follows:

70-640 2nd Edition: availability date next week on 7/15
70-642 2nd Edition: available
70-643 2nd Edition: availability date next month on 8/22
70-647 2nd Edition: available
70-680: (NO 2nd Edition announced as of 7/8/2011)

My 70-640 and 70-643 2nd Editions are on pre-order with Barnes & Noble. Even though OReilly has a buy 2-get 1 free deal, B&N is still cheaper. And if you Google it, you can find promo codes for B&N that saved me an additional 10-15%. My 2nd Edition and 70-680 books have averaged about $40 each including free shipping. They actually sent me a hardback 70-680...schweeeeet!

I hope they consolidated all the mistakes in the 70-680 book. The original release was a shocker!

There is no 2nd Edition of the 70-680 book. I suppose I shouldn't have had it in that list....gonna edit it.

Here are direct links to all the 2nd Edition MS Press Books. The 70-680 is a Sybex book though, but it's coming out August 2011. Thought folks may want to know. The 70-643 may be out on 7/25 as per Amazon.

    TechNet, anyone??

Guys, can someone give me a reason to choose an MS Press book over TechNet? Questions at the end?

Read TechNet, IMO the most exhaustive resource (and not to mention, FREE) out there. Dont wait for any books. ALL you need to know is there on TechNet.

Read the exam blueprint, read TechNet. You cant go wrong.

All of the tests have been updated to include R2 content which is covered in the 2nd edition books. Your first edition books will suffice for the groundwork, but you will need to at least supplement with Technet in order to gain your R2 information. Plus, you will want to download and use R2 to do your labs.

Lab exercises. The MS Press books contain structured labs that walk you through configuring whatever technology you are studying. For those who are new to the technology or don't use certain features in a production environment, the labs can mean the difference between a pass or a fail.

I'm with you, though. I prefer Technet which is why my resource guides are full of Technet links. I don't lab for any of my certs so I can stick with Technet and Resource Kits for my exam prep.

    So... in your opinion...

What is the besto way to prepare it?

First i want to do the 70-642, then the 70-640 and finish with the 70-646

My material for the first exam will be:

Train signal or cbt nuggets 70-642, i don't know what is better.
And then the Microsoft Press 2nd Edition books with R2 content for the 70-642 ISBN 9780735651609

could you recomend me what to do?

    Thank you

The best way to prepare for it is whatever works best for you. Now, for the order of the tests, that is fine. You can do 642 first, but I would supplement DNS from 640 and/or Technet, as 642 brushes on it information wise, but it is still a major part of the exam.

Otherwise, you will need a computer capable of virtualization to lab, lab, lab! Then lab some more. Do all the labs in the books, and make sure you understand them, and get as much hands on with R2 as you can. Try and make up your own scenarios to test also.

I went this route for the 70-680, granted when I took the exam it was the beta and there was no books. Just links to the articles on this forum. I reccomend technet and I can see, the book route as well.

I'm going for the SA now, I work in a very small shop so I feel that it is enough.

If I feel good enough I'll take the extra exams for the EA, although at 48, I'm looking at the light at the end of the tunnel as far as my IT career is concerned.
I've got a lot of guitar playing to catch up on. :)

The MS Press 70-643 2nd Edition is available. And contrary to my original post, I was able to find a promo code and got it cheaper through O'Reilly than either Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Ordered it on Friday, it will be here tomorrow (Tuesday) with free shipping.

    The promo code is MSINT
