We have this question on the Chapter 5 "Do y know it already quizz"...

R1 has configured interface fa0/0 with the ip address 10.5.48.1 255.255.240.0. Wich of the following subnets, when configured on another interface on R1, would not be considered to be an overlapping address ?

a. 10.5.0.0 255.255.240.0
b. 10.4.0.0 255.254.0.0
c. 10.5.32.0 255.255.224.0
d. 10.5.0.0 255.255.128.0

My answers would be c,d because
c. 10.5.32.0/19 means 10.5.32.0 - 10.5.63.255 wich clearly overlaps with 10.5.48.1/20
d. 10.5.0.0/17 means 10.5.0.0 - 10.5.127.255 wich also overlaps with 10.5.48.1/20

In the book the correct answers are a,b...but i think this is totally wrong...
i am right no ? or i just understood completely wrong these things?

And another one from this test :

An internetwork has a discontiguous network 10.0.0.0 and it is having problems. All the routers use RIPv1 with all default configs. Wich of the following answers lists an action that by itself would solve the problem and allow the discontigous network ?

a. Migrate all routers to OSPF, using as many defaults as is possible.
b. disable autosummarization with no auto-summary RIP command
c. migrate to EIGRP, an use as many default as possible.
d. The problem cannot be solved without first making 10.0.0.0 contiguous.

My answers will be a and c..because migrating to a classless routing protocols will solve this ...as far as i know now...
and the book answer is only a. why's that?
and what about those "as many defaults as possible"?

thanks guys

Read the question properly, it asks which would NOT overlap!

On the second question, the book is probably taking the stance that EIGRP is not classless by default, you need to issue the 'no auto-summary' command to make it classless. This doesn't apply in the latest IOS but I don't know what IOS the book is referencing.

The correct answer is 'A' and A only.

    B, C, and D all overlap 10.5.48.0 /20.

The ICND2 Cisco Press errata has the correction.

    "Page 635 – Chapter 5 question 3 – Letter answer should be "A", not "C and D"."

And in regards to your 2nd question, I believe EIGRP autosummarizes by default. You would have to disable autosummarization for 'C' to be correct.
