Are you BU CIS-Security

I was just accepted to Boston University's Computer Information Systems, focus in security, Masters program. If anybody else on here is in that program I'd really like to start getting to know who is out there and doing what. I'm really keen to learn more about the various research projects. Some of the stuff I've read about so far have been pretty niffty.

Maybe we can work out some book exchanges or something. *nudge*nudge*

Nope. I did my undergrad at UMUC. I started after certs because a few contracts required specific certifications to meet the quals. Now I just like to use certs as a way to keep pushing myself. It looks good on my resume and it forces me to develop a depth of understanding rather than just slinging the same old code.

This was very serendipitous I was actually uploading my personal statement for the program when i saw this post. I am applying to BU CIS-Sec, NE Info Assurance and saftey Depaul CIS. Ill let you know if i get in!

Best of luck idr0p! BU and NE both appear to have excellent programs, I can't speak for Depaul, but it looks like you have some really good options there. My schools were BU, CMU, and UMBC. BU and CMU are clearly at the top of the pack along with NE. UMBC on the other hand is working very closely with various government agencies to build a security program that produces folks who are 'ready for action', which I really approve of.

I chose BU for the program, the price, the flexibility, and (I'll admit it) the reputation that comes from a bigger school. Well, that and I like Boston

Yes BU you is my top choice for those reasons also. Its a large big name school, Has a well rounded program which i wanted to have programming and forensics as a part of my program. And also the price is good. Are you doing the program online? Also how long did it take you to get a reply from the time your completed you application. I think mine will be complete on Friday. And i will just need my letters of rec completed to be fully done.

I have been struggling with going to local or online just because of cost, I NEED to go online though.

My question is, do these masters degrees online offer any type of scholarships or something? I really like BU program, but as you know it's 40k.

You are eligible for scholarship online if you submit a GRE

but I'm going to go to the main campus every 3rd session or so (each semester is broken into 2 7 week sessions, so the end of every other semester) to take a class or just go up for a long weekend and meet up with some other folks in the program. Hang out a bit and get to know the University. The online program isn't a different school like it is with most places. I'm enrolled as a BU Metropolitan Collage graduate student. I can go pick up a student id, hang out in the labs, hit on undergrands... the whole 9 yards. I mention this because it is my personal belief that a graduate program should be challenging and engaging. The online program will give you some of the book smarts but to become a part of the 'community' online students really need to make the extra effort to reach out. How you choose to do this is up to you, just thought I'd give some insight into my approach.

Once my transcripts got in to the office, which took ages, I was approved two days later. One day after that I am already registered and have my accounts all set up. I may have greased the wheels a bit by contacting admissions councilors. On a related note; I was given the impression that having a CISSP is becoming something of a bump for getting into grad programs. If you have it, don't hide it.

To the best of my knowledge all BU students have access to the same financing options. This will vary by which school you choose but it seems that all online programs have a variety of financing options.

I know that some schools are removing some perquisite requirements for simply having the CISSP.

I certainly will. Are you aware of any schools that have made a policy for accepting CISSP credentials for the admin process? I'm sure others would be keen to know as well

Where in SC? I've noticed that most of the security related folks are in the Charleston area.

So to give a little of closure to this thread I actually got accepted to the BU program and completed it Sept. 2015! It was very very hard working a full time job and taking classes but the 1 class at a time method did help. It took about 1.5 years to complete and now it has been quite some time after I have completed it.

Funny enough I live in Charleston Now

Congratulations! How was your overall experience with the courses, online exams, study materials? I'm planning ahead and I liked BU and JHU. It's hard to find comments on people that actually go through the whole process.
