I interviewed for another position with another group and they told me that I didn't need to wear a suit. However the company IT structure was very small and everyone was already familiar with who everyone was. I think it all depends on how formal things work around your IT department, which is sounds like its pretty laid back. If it wasn't so tight knit I would probably wear a suit just in case. If my boss knows he wouldn't be suspicious anyway.

Yea, it is definitely like that. It was a small company where everyone knows each other. I'm not saying it wasn't obvious I was over dressed, but they certainly wasn't making it a focus of whether or not I was qualified for the job, which is awesome. I wouldn't want to work somewhere that made a big deal out of something that had nothing related to work anyways.

2nd interview tomorrow with the manager's boss and then another interview on Thursday with another company who I had 2 phone interviews with. A little nervous about the Thursday one. Seems like a lot more formal place as they already emailed me an employment application and a non-disclosure agreement to be filled out prior to going there. Seems like a lot of HR stuff, unlike the first place. This place probably pays a little better but might be less fun.

Did you guys ever turn down a job that pays more but had has a lot more levels of management? Obviously I have to accept whoever offers me a job first, but if I give them a 2 weeks can I turn down a job after they offer it to me to accept another job?

No. Just because there are a few levels of bureaucracy doesn't automatically mean the company culture is boring and drab. Pay attention to the atmosphere during the interviews when you're in the office. If it feels boring and stuffy, then you might not want to take it if that's not a good work environment for you.

And if you're in an employment at will state, then yes, you can leave a job at any time for any reason. Most jobs put new employees on a 90 day probationary period as it is, there's nothing to say you can't put the company on probation. If you accept the job, but then feel the need to leave soon after for another job, just be honest and explain that you don't think this is a good fit, and you appreciate the opportunity, but you'd rather let them fill the position with someone who's more suited to it.

If you respect the company you are interviewing with, and you respect the position you may be getting, wear a suit, if not, don't.. But, if not, why are you interviewing for the position in the first place? I say ALWAYS wear a suit to interviews. It's better to be overdressed rather than under dressed, or dressed like everyone else.
A+, 70-270, and working on 70-290 now. Certs are good.

Dress for the job, but always wear a tie to an IT interview.

    And FWIW-

Try to select a tie that DOESN'T have any crazy designs or phrases on it. Wearing a bright colored tie that says TGIF!!! or WWJD may cost you some points at the interview.

I realize that this may be after the fact, but hopefully this will be useful for future interviews.icon_wink.gif

    For non-management positions, I'd prefer a sport coat/blazer over a suit...just MHO
