Throughput measures the actual amount of data that is processed. Factors might include memory, CPU, OS, etc. Speed is the rate or how fast the data is processed or transferred. A lot of folks use the analogy below, I have added bandwidth as it helps with the overall picture.
Bandwidth - How wide is the pipe.
Throughput - Actual water that passes through after factoring in pot holes for example.
