Exchange recommended reading

Hi guys,

What books would you recommend to someone that wants to learn exchange, not for certifications purposes but just to learn? I need recommendations for both 2003 and 2010.

Im a little off the pace here. I did Exchange 5.5 for my MCSE NT 4.0 elective and ran a number of Exchange flavours but it's been a long time. I hope you get a response. Running a messaging environment sorts the men from the boys and is a vital part of an IT professional's experience. I hope you get some good advice!

Can't recommend any books, but I do recommend the Exchange Server section of the Technet Library: Exchange Server

I also highly recommend the offical "Exchange Team Blog": Exchange Team Blog - Site Home - TechNet Blogs

Working on Exchange content for my own blog as well, as Exchange has been my career focus for 9 out of my 12 years in IT.

You can "learn by doing" with Exchange 2010, as free trials are available for it everything required to set up your own lab to learn it on.

Unfortunately it's a little more difficult to do it with 2003 unless you already have access to licenses for it, as Microsoft no longer offers a trial for it or server 2003.

For Exchange 2003.... plenty of stuff out there: Exchange Server 2003 Unleashed; definitely look for a used copy.

The Exchange 2003 Resource Kit is the best book for 2003, but it is out of print so you will have to settle for a used copy.

I recommend these books (in this order) for 2010:
Exchange 2010 Administrators Pocket Consultant
Exchange 2010 Inside Out
Exchange 2010 Best Practices

The Pocket Consultant covers the day-to-day 'How' tasks while the Inside Out and Best Practices book go deeper into the 'Why' topics. I preferred the layout and overall readability of the Inside Out book over the Best Practices, but you cannot go wrong with either of them.
