Problems migrating from vSwitch to DvS

Ran into this problem with 1 of our ESXi host. No matter what I try I can't get the management network to migrate from vSwitch to DvS. As soon as I migrate the vmk from vSwitch to DvS host loses connection to vCenter. I think I'll try and move the vmk using CLI only tomorrow.

If anyone have any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Create another management network on the vDS and then connect to vCenter using that network. Then migrate the other network and re-test.

Did you enable the virtual adapter on the dvS for management traffic?

As an aside, I usually just leave the vmk on a standard switch. I never saw the value in moving it to dvS since I'm not sharing it with other hosts.

Recent: 11/2019 - RHCSA (RHEL 7); 2/2019 - Updated VCP to 6.5 (just a few days before VMware discontinued the re-cert policy...)

Future: Probably continued Red Hat Immersion, Possibly VCAP Design, or maybe a completely different path. Depends on job demands...

    Hello dave330i,

I'm assuming you have at least two network adapters attached to the ESXi host. In order for you to move from a vSwitch to a Distributed vSwitch you need to move one adapter at a time. This way you have constant communication and you wont drop the connection. If you only have one network adapter another method that might work is using host profiles to make the switch. If you don't have a host configured with a DVS to get a host profile configured from you will have to manually configure the host profile to do this. A third method which I've never personally tried is probably though command line.

Thanks for the reply everyone. It turns out the network guys had the ports screwed up. Once they fixed it, everything worked like a charm.

mostly problems of virtualization are security and management complications but according to this article i read there are some problems solvers available.

So with time new and modern technology as well standards are coming in to sort out such issues related to virtualization, but one thing that companies need to be aware of is that the benefits in one sector should not become a source of problem in another.
