What company would you "jump ship" for?

Are there any companies out there that you'd "jump ship" for if they offered you a job today?
This question is more for those that aren't actively seeking employment, i.e. you already have a job that you're at least satisfied with, and you haven't been looking around for a new one.
Let's say the offer is between a 0% to 20% increase over what you currently make for this hypothetical situation. Main motivator here is, for whatever reason, you've desired a position with a specific company that is now head hunting you. Maybe you've interviewed with them before and didn't get the job for whatever reason, but now months or years later they are after you. Maybe you've never even applied, but always secretly wanted to work there.

And of course...Google or Microsoft, I'd get a running start when I'm jumping ship for that...wouldn't want to miss it. -
Everyone Member Posts: 1,661LOL, somehow I knew Google was going to be on most peoples list.
Microsoft is actually what got me thinking about this. I've made my career off their products, and always thought it would be cool to work for them. I actually had 4 interviews with them about 6 months ago. Some of the toughest technical interviews I've had. I didn't get the job, but was told it had come down to me and 1 other person. The other person got the first offer, and accepted it. Back then I was actually looking for a job. Now I'm not, and pretty happy where I'm at... I almost missed the e-mail, got one from Microsoft 2 weeks ago head hunting me for a position in my area...
As I was writing this, they called me too. The job is similar, but a different division, so they're scheduling a couple more interviews based on the phone screening I just had. If they offer this to me, I don't think I can pass it up. -

Best of luck. If you get it let me know where I should send you my resume. HAHA! -
Tackle Member Posts: 534I'd say go for it Everyone! As you can see...Microsoft and Google are both the holy grail of jobs for Server/OS IT professionals (Maybe even some Cisco guys would agree).
If/When you get the job, make sure to post back so we can make a long list of suggestions in regards to how they can better their products -
mark_s0 Member Posts: 82 ■■■□□□□□□□Sounds like an awesome opportunity, I wish you the best of luck!
For my area, there's only two or three places I really want to work for if I want to specialise in networking (which I do) and luckily enough, I start a new role at one of them in a couple of weeks. Jobs not in my area - would have to be something like Cisco, CERN or MI5/SIS. -

LOL, I was going to say I may get sent to your site if I got it and you called Microsoft for Exchange related help. IIRC you're in a smaller shop though... this is a Premier Field Engineer position to support Enterprise customers in the Chicago area.
The thought of losing my working from home full time benefit that I have now is what made me leery of even entertaining the idea. Then they told me it'd be working from home with all expenses paid travel to customer sites, mostly in the Chicago area, which sounds great! Plus I got the recruiter to reveal the salary range, without saying anything about what I currently make. The range is 14% to 33% higher than what I get now for base salary alone, plus bonuses (I don't get bonuses right now), and paid medical for the whole family. -

QHalo Member Posts: 1,488I found a job at Cisco that really interests me and seems to play towards where I want my career to go. I'm using it as a template to help setup where I need to get my studying and job experience to so I can align myself if I apply. VMware/Citrix are a close second though.

you stole the thoughts right out of my brain!
that was the first company that jumped to mind when i read the topic. I heard EA was also a great company to work for as well. Many game industry companies are awesome. Id work for google, cisco, and probably most start up companies that have a futureCerts: CISSP, EnCE, OSCP, CRTP, eCTHPv2, eCPPT, eCIR, LFCS, CEH, SPLK-1002, SC-200, SC-300, AZ-900, AZ-500, VHL:Advanced+

Everyone Member Posts: 1,661FBI... meh... I've been contacted by them, and I know 2 people who work for them, didn't sound as cool as you might think after talking to them.
Game industry company like Blizzard does sound cool. I'll admit, I'm a WoW player, been a fan of their games since the original Warcraft back in the 90's. I have wondered what a high level Systems Administrator type position would be like with them (that's what my career path has been).
Main thing that keeps me away from those game companies is most of them are in CA. I was stationed in CA for a couple years when I was in the Air Force. I really don't have a desire to live there again. Actually I just don't have a desire to relocate again anytime soon period. -
swild Member Posts: 828Google and Cisco for sure. I would have to get quite a nice offer from MS though.
Add to that list Zappos, Boeing, Northrup Grumman, General Dynamics, NSA, CIA. Any Red Team at any organization. A few universities make the cut. That covers the US. Many more in EU. CERN!
Pipe dreams the lot for now at least. In reality there is one very big nonprofit here that I check weekly. Anything else will require relocating. -

the_Grinch Member Posts: 4,165 ■■■■■■■■■■Funny thing about this topic is it actually happened to me. I interviewed for a college and ultimately never heard anything, a year later they called to see if I was still interested. Main reason I made the jump was for the educational benefits, a free Masters from a well known school is worth it's weight in gold. Add to that, I am getting a raise when factoring in profit sharing and only dealing with one set of users (currently support 90 different companies). I've interviewed with Google and got demolished on one of the three in person interviews, but if they ever called again I would definitely interview. Other then that I think my next move would be probably to start my own business. Getting tired of working for someone, making them lots of money, and doing it on their time table. I've found in IT you are held responsible for decision you yourself did not make. The wink and nod, tell the customer it was the engineer's fault while telling the engineer not to worry about it gets old. I never understood how that was suppose to make you feel better, in the customer's eyes you confirmed I was the reason something didn't go well, regardless of you saying it wasn't my fault...WIP:

To my knowledge, Microsoft does that. I don't know of any other companies that do. (At least, that was the case this past spring. Not sure what's changed since that time.)Currently Working: CCIE R&S

jmritenour Member Posts: 565I'd go anywhere that represented an upward move, and had a decent enough increase in salary/benefits.
That said, I'd love to work for Google. MS to a lesser degree, or IBM.
On the awesome but impractical side, Bethesda Softworks is hiring for a network administrator position. I entertained the thought of applying, but it's just a little *too* far out of my commute range, and I think it would actually be a downward move from where I currently am."Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible; suddenly, you are doing the impossible." - St. Francis of Assisi -

docrice Member Posts: 1,706 ■■■■■■■■■■I'd much prefer working for a smaller (and conceivably nimbler) company where my responsibilities would be more diverse, assuming the business model is good and my co-workers sharp. I've generally learned a lot more in smaller orgs than I have in larger ones due to the number of areas I had to manage.
I recently went from a small company to a very large Fortune 100, and after a month and a half decided to move onto an even smaller company than before. Never been more satisfied in my career, and while I work way more hours than previously, I'm also a lot happier and inspired overall. Cultural differences will vary from company to company of course, but in my experience there's quite a bit of red tape and a feeling of disconnect with the employee base the larger the company is. It might also be the case that your role could be more narrowly-defined in larger organizations.
For these reasons, I'd never choose Microsoft, Cisco, or Google. While larger companies have more resources, I'd feel too small and like I'm not making enough of a difference ... and I just can't have my poor little ego take a hit like that, you know...Hopefully-useful stuff I've written: http://kimiushida.com/bitsandpieces/articles/ -

General Dynamics?! Really?! Maybe their IT division is different, but when I was a ME we spent years cursing the idiots at GD for coming up with lame designs we had to fix.
Spent some time at Intel. Very cool company to work for. The 1 company I would jump ship would be Living Social. Assuming they give me decent amount of options.2018 Certification Goals: Maybe VMware Sales Cert
