Connecting to a Cisco Router via Rollover
Hello everyone I think I got this into the right section, anyways.
I am trying to access a Cisco 2500 Router via hyper terminal from a XP workstation. The workstation connects to a patch panel via RJ45. From the patch panel I was connection to the console port using... RJ45.... =\ and getting nothing. The settings that were being used in the hyper term. were: 9600 Parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, No flow control.
After getting home and doing some reading I found out that a RJ45 rollover cable is needed.
I guess my question is, From my patch panel can I use a rollover cable and connect into my console port? or is the rollover cable only useable if i am going RJ45 to a DB9? I do remember a few months ago being able to connect from my patch panel to the console port but how it was done is a loss for me.
Thank you all

Hello,
I was just trying to connect my 2650xm to my Win 7 workstation and can't connect using a rollover RJ45 to RJ45. I recall my professor doing it in class last session, he went from the patch panel to his workstation and was able to connect.
I think we could get better help moving this thread to CCNA. Is it possible? -

The console port is designed for serial communication - not ethernet.
You could use a patch panel, as long as the wiring is ultimately a rollover AND going to a serial port via an adapter (like db9).
PC > DB9 to RJ45 adapter > straight through to panel > RJ45 rollover to console port
You can't console using a network/ethernet port on your PC, though.CISSP | CCNA:R&S/Security | MCSA 2003 | A+ S+ | VCP6-DTM | CCA-V CCP-V -

You can access the router with a rollover but the router have to be previously configured and you need to know the IP address of the router Ethernet port.
