Business cards for students
jamesleecoleman
Hi!!
I've been thinking about getting business cards even though I'm a student. Has any one done this?
I've ran into two people a while ago and I didn't have any type of business card on me. I felt a little
unprepared. I went to grrcon (security conference in Grand Rapids) and some of my class mates had business cards.
I already know to put my name, contact information, and certifications. Would I also put the title of "student"
on the card with the degree program I'm in? Not to be silly or anything but since I am traveling abroad for
foreign languages, should I make cards in those languages too? I would really like to work abroad.
Would there be anything else I could add?
Would it be safe to add the languages that I will learn in the future after I've become (near) fluent in them?

I would just put my name and contact info. It's not a business card per se, but more of like a contact card. In many other languages, they aren't even called business cards. See of it more as a way for people to get in touch with you, not your employer. I wouldn't put stuff like half-done certs and degree programs. Now, of course, if you are making cards for a specific event (school meet etc), maybe you could put the degree program you are in, so people can get in touch with their peers more easily maybe.
I am a big fan of languages and linguistics, so I would definitely consider making business cards in those other languages too; even if just for practice. Make sure to observe the way the locals will make their cards for example (layout etc), don't assume everybody does them like in the US

I agree with PsychoFin. The best way is to put all the contact informtaion and put on very simple. You don't want to make it to complicated as it will just confuse the customer which you don't want to do. Maybe, also do something different. For example brighter colours of diferent material for the business card itself. I am going to get some business cards made soon by a compnay called Cards made easy. I am going to use this advice, thanks very much

Thank you both!!!
Very good point about how business cards are done PsychoFin. I will have to look into that.

I think it's important to do this - go over to vistaprint and get 500 cards for 10 bucks. That way you can hand out cards to new contacts, friends, and wimmenz.
I have personal business cards, and I carry a few in my wallet (mostly for winning stuff in fishbowls). Occasionally I do use them though.

i created some on vistraprint years ago.
don't put to much info on the card. It doesn't take much for it to look cluttered and sloppy.
What is the point in the card? Get part time consulting work, internships, a job after getting a degree?

I honestly kinda felt left out when people asked me for a business card. I didn't have anything to give them if they wanted to help me out with a job or an internship or something.
I did find a design that I like but I had to find out what I wanted to put on the card and I'm still not sure about what I'm going to put on it. I know it'll have the basic contact information though.
I did have this jerk in the book store say this to me. "You're not serious about getting a job" then he went on to tell me that he's joking. After he asked if I had a business card. Then I asked him for his but he said that he left them at "the office" I wanted to punch him in the face. I told him that I am in school so I figured that it would be okay to not have a business card.
Maybe I'll just make personal cards and I can use them to give to the ladies :P
