He's under starters orders......and he's off

My time has come, the big one. Been thinking about it for years, and now finally, I have found myself in the position to start. CCIE R&S.

My plan is quite simple, a chapter a day, nibble my way through as many books as I can until I'm ready for the written. Hoping April, May time, but as I am well aware, life WILL get in the way at some point, I've just got to try and keep the focus. I plan to read 2 books at once, different subjects alternating days. (Read that tip somewhere). I'm an early riser so hope to get some quality time in first thing, followed by recap on the journey to work, sneak in what I can during lunch, then recap and plan next days study in the evening. Going to try using Evernote and Anki. may even delve into Freemind. But carefull not to lose myself in how I study/present rather than what I study. Heard stories of students spending many hours preparing an indepth and detailed study plan, but then not studying, easily distracted.... I have 3/4 of the ine rack, so with the help of ebay will finish it off over the coming months.... I will try and update now and again...watch this space.

Anyone has any tips, please throw them my way

Andy

Just ran a skim back over Odom ch 10 BGP basic so about 4 hrs today... eyes hurt.. Hitting ch 12 and start re-review of ch 11 tomorrow at 06.00... As all you that are trying know, its all about repetition. 2 or 3 times around and concepts start to become familier. skimming becomes quicker. its the first and second times thats soooo painful...

Just strictly just my $.02, but have you considered doing some labbing after a chapter? It helped me a lot during the written prep to mix it with some actual practice. I found that after practicing, concepts either were verified, or not. If they weren't, when I read back the next time, I found that it made a lot more sense since I had labbed it.

Best of luck either way man. Don't quit, and you will reach your goal.

    Mrock4,
Appreciate ur 2c. Its on the agenda.. i was initially going to read multiple books at once, but i quickly found that quite impractical. I am planning to try some labs ( to mirror book examples) when i get onto the more specialised books..ie doyle, vol I and II QOS . . Etc...i have found the examples very thorough, in the odom book, though quite difficult to because of the comments. They get in the way of the highlighted text And repeating in every example that some irrelevant txt has been cut is getting quite painful..

A quick question to those who've been here.. the odom book, does it cover all the subjects needed for written and If i study just the subjects within the odom book, using other books to fill in detail (doyle tcpip, qos exam, multicast) would that cover the exams.

Into chapter 17 Multicast routing now. I can flick the pages and see the appendix..hoping to have it finished by the end of this week. I then pland to read relevent chaprters in others book that relate to easch chapter in the odom, rather than plowing end to end through other books. Going to get the Boson tests in about a month..if all goes to plan..A colleague of mine passed his written yesterday, he did it by labbing through INE.

Wasn't revision.... throught vol 1 on Vol 2. also repetition reading of odem. ospf, eigrp falling into place. Ordered the last bit for my rack (switches) gone for 3550 due to cost. Have everything ready to build. Will try and build over the weekend. Currently have the rack set up in a small garage, buried under the usual junk of life. A few months ago I wired up 3 switchable mains socket, that can be switched from inside the house. Idea is hit the 3 switches then boot the laptop. by the time the laptop is ready the rack should be up. I want to be able to access the rack remotely, Anyone have any suggestions for a remote access PDU available in the uk ?

Not sure if you can do this, I have a DMZ with my ps3. It's address was a 99.x.x.x, so I should've been able to get to it directly via telnet.

Do you have a shot up with your rack?

Access from outside isn't a problem, myhome line has a fixed IP...its remotely turning the power to the rack thats an issue..

I'm doing that climb, the amount of time and money I've invested in this over the years needs to be justified...lol. My labs complete and working, with remote access, so I can lab from work when possible. I'm on vacation next week, then when I come back I'm going to hit it with a vengeance...It just seams to have taken a lifetime to get to this position..
