Ok so my laptop doesn't have a com port so all I have to work with are crossover cables. When I use hyperterm and connect it all up it does nothing. Not even the lights blink on the router. They only light up when I plug it into the eth0 port. Does hyperterm not work with that? What am I doing wrong?
I know the easy solution would be to buy a usb console cable but I don't have even $20 to spend lol.

you can't connect to a router via crossover cable if it's not configured for telnet or ssh.
You need that usb thing and a rollover cable to connect to a console port. -
Todd Burrell Member Posts: 280You need a USB to serial converter cable and then a console cable to connect to the console port of the router.

lrb Member Posts: 526You can actually make your own rollover cable if you have any spare CAT5 as all it is is just a cable with the pins reversed on one end (i.e. pin1-->pin8, 2-->7, and so forth). You can pickup a DB9-RJ45 connector as well for like 5-10 dollars from most electronics stores.

Now if you have a terminal server that uses them, making rollover cables is a big savings versus buying them. Plus you can make custom lengths. Which is why I've made 20 or so.
