beginner_ccnabeginner_ccna Member Posts: 59 ■■□□□□□□□□
ive been told that there is an option on a 7200 so i can change it into a switch

the image i have is: c7200-boot-mz.124-22.T

in the slot mode under configure, i have the below options:

PA-A1
PA-FE-TX
PA-2FE-TX
PA-GE
PA-4T+
PA-8T
PA-4E
PA-8E
PA-POS-OC3

which one do i need to select?

thanks in advance

    Hardware emulated by GNS3 - GNS3
At this moment, it is not possible to emulate Catalyst switches with Dynamips/GNS3. This is due to the impossibility to emulate ASIC processors used in those type of devices. However you can use the EtherSwitch module with 2600s, 3600s and 3700s Series. Keep in mind that this module works differently (uses the vlan database etc.) and doesn’t support the following features:
    • Access Switch Device Manager (SDM) Template
    • ACL – Improved Merging Algorithm
    • ARP Optimization
    • BGP Increased Support of Numbered as-path Access Lists to 500
    • BGP Restart Neighbor Session After max-prefix Limit Reached
    • BGP Route-Map Continue Support for Outbound Policy
    • Clear Counters Per Port
    • DHCP Snooping
    • DHCP Snooping Counters
    • Diagnotics Options on bootup
    • ErrDisable Reactivation Per Port
    • ErrDisable timeout
    • EtherChannel – Flexible PAgP
    • Etherchannel Guard
    • Fallback Bridging
    • Flex Link Bi-directional Fast Convergence
    • Flex Link VLAN Load-Balancing
    • Flex Links Interface Preemption
    • GOLD – Generic Online Diagnostics

Fortunately 2950 switches are pretty cheap on eBay. I still rarely use the routers I purchased from eBay, but I'm definitely getting my moneys worth on the switches.

You're better just using packet tracer for the switching labs.

Better off using a simulation than real hardware ?

    I disagree on that.

Packet tracer "could" get you your CCNA, but when I was attempting to use it, I ran into a ton of issues with the program which saving, closing out, then reopening would fix. STP was iffy, Multiple EtherChannels would crash the program, etc...

I would definitely suggest purchasing two cheap 2950s off ebay and labbing out with real hardware.

Yeah, Packet Tracer is a good program for studying for the CCNA topics, but don't bother for anything else like voice, security or professional certain.

Just the other day, I was messing around with the switches. One of the L2s had issues with SSH. The L3 couldn't have a default gateway configured.

Things like BGP, Tunnels, Etherchannel and other advanced topics either crash the program or only half work.

I'd definitely invest in real switches. And if you can VMs or double or quad NICs work wonders.
