You may have seen that story before, but it's a good one. The geostatisticians were actually very correct as the sys admin's calculations did not take in account the resistance of copper.

You can pick that story apart so hard. At best, it is a dramatic interpretation of the real events. For example, if it took 3ms to timeout, and 500 miles was 3ms, then it would have to be a 250 mile radius max because of the round trip time. -
