Senior Desktop Engineering positions/Career advice

A question. I have gotten inquiry's regarding a few senior desktop engineering positions. My question. Are these positions good ways to get into Sys admin, security or management roles?

I am really looking to get into more management roles(IT Director) or security roles. Currently in a field engineering role(been here for 7 years) now with a good amount of desktop, network, server support, consulting and project management type experience.

I am curious if a senior desktop engineering position would be a good path into a management/security role? On the plus side, many of these type positions in my area are paying from 20-55k more than what i am currently making which would be nice. On the downside, i am not sure whether it would be a step back in certain ways.

I am certainly not in a rush to find a job since i currently have one. However, i have seen a number of these positions as of late and was curious as to the perception of these positions.

Definitely need more info. As with many titles, responsibilities vary. For some companies a Desktop Engineer is nothing but a glorified break/fix tech or password ninja. For others it incorporates tasks from network/systems admin such as VDI deployments, asset lifecycle management, and even high level tasks such as architecting.

Have you got any experience at all of supervising or managing people? If not, providing these jobs give you that exposure then do that.

thanks for the feedback. I guess i was thinking more generally, however it sounds as if the responsibilities associated with this "title" vary.

@turgon No. My management experience is limited to more project management as opposed to the direct management of people.
