Need some managers advice

So there is this guy who has been in his current position at the new company for about 7 months. General IT tasks, basic networking day to day break fix help desk tasks some group policy just an all round IT guy. It was a step back from where he was previously employed doing more high level VM, Exchange migration, Domain migrations etc etc but there was no level to climb and basically maxed out pay and it was time to move on.

Today there is an opening to where said guy could easily fill in and pick up where current employer works (handed in notice). However management is thinking about posting the position and filing it with a new employee. How can this guy bring it up and say that he is easily qualified for the position without rocking the boat to much. Guy would also like an extra $10K in salary for the position and still thinks this would be the low end of the range.

Looking for a political way to throw hat into the ring and get compensated without upsetting boss.

It really would depend on the company culture and its job recruiting policies. In larger companies, its normal to always post a new position or backfill and then allow both internal and external candidates to apply. The manager may be obligated to post the job. If the company believes in a culture of having the right people in the right jobs, the manager should be open to reviewing your friends qualifications as part of a candidate pool. It really depends on the cicumstance of the company and maturity of the management. Good luck to your friend. My two cents is to have an open dialoque with the manager. Btw in some organizations, the correct protocol is for your friend to discuss the interest with their direct supervisor and not the hiring manager. That is intended to prevent poaching, etc. I hope everything works out. .
