Interesting how life works

I had to stay home from work today due to 1 of my kids being sick. Got a call on my personal cell (I usually leave it at home) from a number I don't recognize. Its a recruiter looking for a VMware expert. It seems their VMware expert at a major client site left and they need a replacement ASAP. Normally I would politely decline since I'm happy at my current position, but he's throwing around numbers that are hard to say no to.

Now I've got an interview early next week and a chance to make significant gain in my career goal (and way more money) because I had to stay home to take care of a sick daughter. :)

    Good luck to you, Dave!

Another word of caution: make sure the numbers are real and not a bait - some recruiters have shady practices.

Thanks everyone. I've done some research and it seems to be a good size company and the pay is in line with similar position in the area. I just wasn't expecting to reach it for another year or two.

There's zero pressure on me because even if I don't get this job, there's already a backup in place. I had to reach out to my old boss on non-work related issue and it turns out he quit his job and accepted a position at a very large company as the head of a new division. He'll need several VMware guys once his projects get underway and asked if I'd be interested. :)

Interview went ok. I was pretty nervous so blanked on an easy cli question. They'll let me know by end of the week. Either way it was a good experience.

Good to hear. Looking forward to hearing the next update. As we have been discussing experience vs certifications recently, I'm curious: how much vmware experience do you have?

I wouldn't hire me based on that interview. I was too nervous and gave too many poor/incomplete answers to stuff I knew. As for VMware experience, I have about 14 months. :) Its little misleading because most of my experience is building VM infrastructure from ground up vs. administering it.

Just got a call back. I guess the interview wasn't as bad as I thought. They'll make me an offer tomorrow.

Congrats! Guess you have to take your kids out to Six Flags or something since they "helped" you get the job by keeping you home that day. icon_lol.gif

Always good to get calls, but treat with caution. You have a good job and might not need the hassle of this adventure. Ask the recruiter for all the details. You are a busy man.

Good job. Now forget it and move on. Perform at work. Apply for other jobs.

Consider carefully. They have problems there. If you accept, expect to receive them, pressure, long hours, no help. If married, discuss indoors and get ready for a tough 8 weeks.

Posting again before we go overboard on the congrats. Congrats anyway!

Postscript. If the fundamental issues there are due to bad management, that bad management is alive and well and waiting for you.
