I know lots of people living abroad but they
    1) Are students
    2) In Peace Corps/Military
    3) Teaching English

I do know some consultants who work on projects and I've seen positions for teaching technology in developing nations. I used to think I'd like to do something like that, but right now I am content with just taking vacations abroad.

Actually, if you're having trouble finding work, taking a year off to do English teaching (most countries just require a 4-year degree, not teaching or English language specific) could be beneficial. You can study up for more certs while working (here most teaching gigs are ~30hr/wk for 2-2.5k/mo with free housing, but studio apt normally) and gain experience that is important to large businesses. Experience living overseas looks very attractive to multinational companies as it is very different from just going on vacation for a week or two and can help you deal with overseas partners or even be able to give you an overseas posting.

so for those who have contracted overseas, how do you go about it? does anyone have any good websites for this or is it best to just visit jobsites local to the country you want to go to? Ive enquired about Oz before but their working holiday visa seemed abit of a pain if you wanted to do IT contracting as you could only do short stints of 3 months for any one employer. working in the EU is not a problem with me being british but its those countries further afield that interest me most in particular the Asia region, but hey, i would consider most place tbh.

I would love to go contracting in short stints whilst i travel at the same time. Hell, my career plans could be put on hold for the next 5-10 years, i have plenty of time for that haha!

any tips would be much appreciated.

I saw a post on LinkedIn that reminded me of this thread... "Backbone Messaging Engineer" in Dublin Ireland. Linked to this job posting: Job: Back Bone Messaging Engineer in Dublin, Ireland | Bullhorn Reach

Sounds like something that could be really cool. Ireland is another place I'd love to visit. Not looking to move anywhere right now though especially not over seas, but still fun to dream about. ;)

On the tax question, the first 91.5k (last years rate, it changes every year) you make is untaxed, anything over that is taxed normally. That doesn't apply to federal employees (GS) or military. If your company provides a housing allowance (like most contracting positions do) then that is also untaxed (up to a specific amount, based off area).

And don't forget that everything above that 91.5k is taxed at the higher tax bracket!

True, but unless you're making way over that it's not hard to make money disappear. IRA, business expenses, charities, etc for the write offs.

    Which reminds me.

If you need a write off go to Goodwill. They like to hand out blank receipts lol
