Networking Interview Next Week

sentimetalsentimetal Member Posts: 103
I have an interview coming up with a large IT services company for a low level networking position in their NOC. I currently work in accounting and am more than halfway through the Cisco Networking Academy, so in other words, pre-CCNA. Does anyone have advice? I'm more excited than I am nervous, but I am kind of worried they'll ask me a basic question and I'll choke on it. :\

Dont lie or make stuff up! But if you know the basics to networking (IP addressing, basic routing protocol functions, OSI model, difference between a router / hub / switch , how to configure a routing protocol, etc) then I think you should be ok.

I don't have any specific advice. I assume they are looking for someone who can make good decisions, is passionate about technology and learning, speaks highly of his employers (since choosing bad employers would be a negative reflection upon one's decision making abilities),is friendly, professional, well dressed, and someone they'd want to see on a daily basis. If you've been studying hard, you probably already know enough to be useful and you have some experience in the business world, so you know how important systems availability and making good decisions can be. The real question is how much do you know about this company and why do you want to work there, other than it's the place you managed to get an interview?

A network administrator friend of mine had very good things to say about them, having done business with them before in the past.

Don't lie. Ask them questions, be genuine interested in the work, be yourself.

Still really anxious! I suppose interviews do that to you, though. The company is Insight, I've heard good things about them from a friend or two, and I know they're a huge company. Does anyone have experience with them?

You'll do fine mate. Just remember to speak slow and clear, make eye contact, give them a firm handshake and speak positively. Leave the rest to your luck. If they ask you about something about which your not sure, dont give vague answers, tell them you arent sure but given a few minutes, you can find out (using Google and stuff). Good luck!

Sorry, dont have experience with that company.

I got the job. :) I'm a bit nervous seeing as it'd be my first job in this field and I'd be out of my comfort zone - and the drive is 35-40 minutes... but I kind of really want it. :D Thanks for all the advice so far, I hope this works out well.
