Which Linux is the most popular in the real world?

Or is Linux just Linux. Which should I install and mess with at home?

There are minor variations in most of them. The big thing is to not install a GUI - that will force you to learn things better.
Our *nix engineer currently prefers Debian.

To answery you question. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the most popular distribution. It costs a few hundred dollars for the License. Next most popular would be Novell's Suse Linux which I think is a bit cheaper. The distributions are most prominent in enterprise settings.

If your talking about the most popular free distributions then take a look at DistroWatch.com to see which Linux is most popular. It is safe to say that some of the more popular free Linux distributions are Fedora Core, Mandriva, Debian, and Ubuntu.

If your thinking about studying for a certification I would use either Fedora Core, which is supported by Red Hat or CentOS, which is based off Red Hat since most Linux certs are Red Hat Centric.

Personally I prefer Ubuntu and FreeBSD.
