My fa0/1 in packet tracer is completely down. I tried adding an ip address to it but did not work. can someone give me a solution...?

Switch port? You cant assign an IP address to L2 switch's port.

^ yep.

Taking it a couple steps further:
(doing this from memory, so forgive me if im wrong)

Assign a VLAN an ip address:
(config)#int vlan vlan-id

Assign a VLAN to a port(s):
(config-it)#switchport access vlan vlan-id

Like others have said, switchport, ip address? I'm thinking that perhaps you're trying a multilayer switch. Did you do a no shutdown command? Also, if you could do a show run and paste it on here. We'd be able to help you out easier than just throwing out guesses.
