Need help in writing program for masters research project

Hi everyone,
I am currently a masters student doing my research project on e-commerce, more specifically on ebay. I need to write a program that automatically capture information of every new item that is listed and also automatically get records of items that has ended. I know heard of other people writing so called "spider programs" to do this.
I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with this, as I really need some help. I have a background in computer science, so I have quite a lot of experience with programming (C, Java in particular). It would be really really great if anyone could give me a hand, or if anyone knows some source where I could use.
