Entry Level Job Salary

Hi,

I'll be graduating in about a year with a Bachelor of Science in Network and Communications Management. I am wondering what would be an estimated entry level salary (Jr network admin or something around that). By the time I graduate I will be (hopefully) CCNA certified and probably working on my CCNP, also I would have around 18 months of and network admin intern (doing basic stuff, doing reports and managing the LANs, make sure the networking environment is stable.Installing and configuring some LAN hardware. Helping out cabling team and field engineers)

What do you think? You would say I should know becuase I am on the field but the internship are non-paid so I have no clue what to expect out there. Thank you in advance.

Anyone telling you that they've taken a test without going over test questions is a bold face liar. It happens in a fields of study and not just IT. From cops, lawyers, nurses and doctors; you name it they have prep tests available.(It's been this way from the beginning) If you're taking a test by prep exams alown then you're a paper cert. If someone tells me they can take a test without looking at prep questions, I would highly doubt their honesty.

MrBishop, you have so many "colorful" notions. I didn't use practice exams for the CCNP ROUTE or the CCNP TSHOOT. I answered minimal practice questions for the CCNP SWITCH--just enough to determine that the set of practice questions I had purchased was fundamentally flawed and useless. I've also never used brain ****. I suspect, once one turns to the dark side, it's easier to justify that, if you imagine that almost everyone else is doing it. I've certainly noticed that thought process among certain criminal subgroups I studied in a previous role.

I personally use practice questions when: (1) I plan to study/review but (2) I do not have time to study/review everything and (3) I am not sure where I am weakest.

PS - And for the record, I still recommend that if someone with no experience has trouble getting a job with a CCNA, to go for CCNA Security and/or CCNA Voice rather than CCNP! You're an entry-level candidate. Resolve to be the best entry-level candidate that you can be.

Yes, I have a mind of my own but from what I've seen and I even mean professors have used prep questions to take Cisco tests. I've seen them used more than not and even people who have gone for the CCIE use Labs, questions, etc that are very similar to the exam. Just for instance, you can take classes prepared by Cisco standards (Their Academy) and the material covered in the course is not reflected in the exam. Ever time I see this discussion, it reminds me of the pro players that claim they don't use performance enhancing drugs. Just because you haven't been caught doesn't mean you're not taking them.

Yes, I agree that taking additional associate level cert will help you but I also feel that being strong in one area such as R&S speaks volumes. I feel the more knowledge you gain the smaller the learning curve will be; to get a person with little experience up to speed with everyone else. You'll come around to seeing my point someday.

mrbishop, I dont want to bump heads but only test engine i used was the one that came with the bryant advantage for the ccna and it just was generic test questions not scenario based. But i feel its a great sense of satisfaction when you just sit for the test with just knowledge and you read the scenarios and the light in your head goes on. Then compared to just flying through the test and know its A, B, C etc..

Thats why you study to master the material so you can gain the knowledge and pass the test. Cisco exams are supposed to be real world so in theory if you can diag and solve the scenarios in the test you should be able to resolve most problems in the real world. If you cant manage to pass the test then what makes you think you can handle unexpected situations when issues arise in the real world?

also junior positions seem to want candidates to know how to establish vpns and work with asa/pix firewalls. Layer 3 is left to the intermediate/senior guys. Getting a ccnp will provide a deeper understanding of R/S which will benefit anyone looking to get into the cisco realm. Also having it is cool and all as a sense of achievement but dont really expect to do ccnp level work right out the door.
