VCP5 vs VCP5-DT

Which VMware certification is most desired in the IT market? I assume the Desktop specialization is centered toward helpdesk/technical support and professional on vSphere 5 is focused toward systems administration for data centers. If I am currently working in helpdesk, should I pursue VCP5-DT? The VMware website implies the VCP5 cert is obtained first before taking the VCP5-DT. Is this right?

I believe your assumption is wrong. That's not what it means, VCP5 - Desktop confirms your knowledge of View 5.x installation, configuration, and troubleshooting, including security considerations and ThinApp creation tasks. Your right about obtaining the VCP 5 before VCP 5-DT.

For comparison, VMWare Certified Professional (VCP) Jobs in Florida - Job Search Beta and VCP-DT Jobs in Florida - Job Search Beta

You should go for VCP 5. Way way more bang for your buck.

VCP5-DT has indeed the VCP5 as requirement so that is what you have to have first anyway. VMware View requires vSphere after all so it doesn't make any sense to be proffesional in one part of a product. You also can't be car mechanic with only having knowledge of the gearbox.. you need to know the car around it before you can even touch the gearbox as people won't take it out for you and put it on a table in order for you to fix it and then put it back in again ... ok I admit - stupid analogy - but you get the idea :p
