Apache HTTP Server
Hi
Do I need server as my OS in order to run this
Not even sure if this is my best option but all I need to do is create a folder on my PC that I can put photos and video files in so my relative who lives in London can access them and see my children
So far I have installed it to my laptop as a test and configured the folder and edited a file to point to this new folder, instructions found here
Geek to Live: How to set up a personal home web server
So far I am stuck on setting a password
Also my laptop doesnt have a public IP it gets it from the wireless router
Any help or an easier solution for what I am trying to do would be
Thanks
Lee

Edit - probably can't use that for the video files though...
You could do it by FTP & FileZilla too... -

You would be better off to use something such as SSH, if you don't have a spare box to install Linux on, you can install SSH server software on your PC or just power up a Linux virtual machine. A a good program for copying files over SSH is WinSCP WinSCP :: Free SFTP and FTP client for Windows -

First choice: (based on feature list and your need)
ownCloud.org | Your Cloud, Your Data, Your Way!
Second Choice

There are probably many other ways to get this done but I think those are interesting options. Let us know how it goes. -

If your wireless router supports port forwarding then that's an option.Currently reading: Network Warrior, Unix Network Programming by Richard Stevens -

Thanks for your help and advice
I tried Opera Unite which works quite well very easy to get started in seconds and your done. Problem I had is maybe I want to give my relative 200 pictures, they would need to download them individually as Opera gave no feature of being able to download directories or even RAR files
I looked at owncloud.org and I could see trial version was downloadable so this looks like paid for software
I downloaded ajaxexplorer and didnt have a clue what to do with it, lol I am new to this so I need something quite simple but also being able to copy entire folders
Thanks for your help

Asif Dasl Member Posts: 2,116 ■■■■■■■■□□Yeah I guess Dropbox/SkyDrive, you are only talking a couple hundred MB at most for that... upload a ZIP file and it'll work with Windows XP upwards... you don't sound as if you want control over it so that would work fine...
SkyDrive limits files to 100Mb (5Gb limit) / DropBox limits files to 300Mb (2Gb limit - up to 16Gb if you pimp for them)
OwnCloud is open source -

By far the best solution for what you want to do.
