Been hearing about this configuration or setup, what does Alpha, beta, gamma mean with regard to server/ip clustering or scanning a domain?

For SQL Server you might have your primary database system which has fail over to one or more beta (secondary) systems.
For an additional level of security there is a gamma system in another data center that the database is replicated to. In this instance it is not participating in the cluster. -
