For those of you who are fully remote

Please tell me you have considered moving to South America or somewhere awesome. My friend is going to Cartagena Colombia in 10 days to find a second apartment. This will be his "primary" residents.I have to admit I am completely jealous. Any of your big time ballers considering this arrangement?

One of our programmers broke a bone in his foot so he has been working from home and loving it. Sadly, much harder to do when you are a support specialist

I'm happy just sitting at home working, week or two at a time.

Only downside is I can work from anywhere airport/hotel/bar parking lot ad depending on the emergency I will work from anywhere

To answer your question in short, no.

He works for a large service provider as an account manager. He manages accounts in eastern europe, central and south america. Colombia is one of his favorite spots in the world. He is consistently visiting Cali, Cartagena, and Medillian (sp). All cities in northern Colombia.

He leaves in a few days to secure his new apartment. I'm excited to get down there and visit him in his new pad.

He was thinking about Brazil, Chile (Cyber), and Argentina, but Colombia won out. He just digs the culture down there.

Sounds really awesome. I'd love to work at home. My job could very easily be done from home but I know work would not allow it. Ugh...

He has a perfectly good theory behind it. First of all he has a house in St. Louis, Mo, which he will keep. He has a lot of family in the area and they will see that the house is looked after. He has contracts with landscaping companies and other service companies to make sure the property is kept up. That part is locked in loaded. The other piece is getting an apartment secured.

Check this out, for 1,500 a month gets breakfast every morning to his door, all natural fruit and grains. He gets his laundry done for free, even his suits, they hand press them and starch if needed. He has a maid come in and clean his pad 3 days a week. This is all included in the 1,500.

His plan is to live there for a while as a second residence. He can remote from work everyday if he lives there. It's part of the companies policy. If you live X amount of distance away you can remote everyday so why not.

His long term plan is to get a place in Eastern Europe in a few years. He has been speaking and reading slovak languages and learning the Cyrillic alphabet for a few years now and is getting close to 3,000 hours of study. He loves learning languages like we enjoy learning technology.

Woooow. Sounds like a great plan, might as well take advantage of the working at home luxury. He'll always have a place back at home to come back to, too. I think that's pretty much exactly how I'd do it if I had a well paying job that I could work from home. A family member of mine makes a ton of money working on databases from home but hardly ever leaves the state! .. very demanding job though.

I was actually surprised when his company promoted him from developer to account manager. Especially since his degree is in computer science, not business or any other related field.

Who knows one day you may be in a position to make such a move. My wife and I are looking at moving outside the country once she graduates from CRNA school. The only problem is some countries won't let you be a anesthetist without a full blown doctorate. Australia was one of the countries we were looking at but once we saw that constraint it immediately shot down that idea.

I would love to move to South America some day. I have to get out of a Support Specialist position though. Hard to do Desktop Support remotely.

That's a cool goal. What exactly does he do now that he's an "Account Manager"? In my company that means sales.

Essentially he performs customer relationship management. He meets with the customers and gets a pulse of the relationship. He manages expectations and also does some program management.

It really does sound like a cool job. I'd be interested in a role like that one day.

So he meets them via Skype or something? I prefer the technical side of things but his overall plan is very cool and one I'd be interested in pursuing in the future.

I'm shifting to working 100% remote and I'm just happy to finally be able to get out of Phoenix and move to Seattle. If I was looking to get out of the country I would like to do Japan though, and that is a long term goal being looked at depending upon how fast I can move my Japanese studies along.

He uses a conferencing solutions like global crossing, netmeeting, etc. He is usually out of the country half the year traveling to Central and South America. It's a great gig and since he speaks fluent English and Spanish and some Portuguese his salary has gone up exponentially since learning those foreign languages.

IMO If you have the will and the drive to learn a foreign language and take that leap of faith you can make some big money. He has barely scratched the surface and he is making 150,000+. The account managers that are CONUS are making 75-100. That global element has kicked up his price tag and they are more than willing to pay for it. That's why he is so interested in Eastern Europe. That's another feather in his cap that can lead to additional revenue.
