Can I be a server/middleware guy without getting into security certs?

I love Linux and I love Windows. Yes, I said I love Windows. I had an idea of sticking with servers and middleware, (eg.linux, windows, citrix, ect.), and then further going into programming languages like SQL or C/C++ even.

But I don't know if this would be practical or if it would be worth the effort.

I know a Windows/middleware guy who makes good money without any security certifications. They do know how to configure a firewall and VPN services.

You don't need security certs to do this type of work. But you do need to know security - general principles, overall foundation, and considerations specific to the systems you work on.
