Have any of you tried to do this?

LFS Project Homepage

Is this a good way to learn the ends and outs of Linux if you wanted to become a linux admin? Forgive me for my ignorance but I don't have much experience with *nix.

Seriously not! It's a waste of time. If you want to learn Linux Administration, catch a good book on the subject ;)

    LPIC-1 or RHCSA / RHCE.

LFS is cool if you build embedded system but you can do the same with any good linux distribution ;)

I tried it and lost a lot of time to built this stuff. Debian or Red Hat do the same, and your system is up and running in 20 minutes... You can't learn from the LFS book if you don't know linux.

LFS definitely is post-certification material. It's not suitable for learning or preparation.

It's useful if you want to dig in deeper later on, like compiling software or playing with bleeding edge stuff.
