was just wondering if someone would kindly explain to me what config is loaded the first time a router is booted up, or even a swtich for that matter. Im using a packet tracer and whenever i use the command

show startup-config

on a new router or switch i get this response

startup-config is not present

thanks

This is because a config hasn't been saved.
Show run - this will show the config which is currently running.
    copy run start
    - this will copy the running config to the startup config. It will ask what you want to save the start config file as, press enter so it saves as the default. Now when you do show start it should work.
    Router#show start
    startup-config is not present
    Router#copy run start
    Destination filename [startup-config]?
    Building configuration...
    [OK]
    Router#show start

    Lab:
Combination of GNS3 and Cisco equipment if required.

that is because there is no any configuration on that new router i.e you didn't configure.
