Config register: IOS from flash

in CCNA & CCENT
Hi,
I'm currently studying for the CCENT exam and thought this bit was a little odd: When booting up involves getting the lowest numbered IOS image from flash, it seems the lowest number image would be the oldest. If each IOS that's added to flash gets a higher number, that means the lowest numbered IOS is the oldest. Why would a boot sequence default to the oldest instead of the newest IOS? To be 'safe' perhaps?
Thanks
Ian

You usually specify which IOS to boot prior to reloading the switch/router in order for the system to load the new IOS upon reload.

Right, but if you don't specify, and the register ends with '01' it goes through the IOS files on flash starting from the oldest file, which I thought was odd. Thanks for the reply
