I am planning on adding a server to my home lab for VMware and HyperV. I have a Skeletek rack for 1U components.
Looking at Dell PowerEdge servers.
What type of special criteria should I be looking for in servers to handle virtualization?
Besides, Dell, what other brands do you recommend?

Install VMWare Workstations 8 which allows you to install nested Esxi, HyperV, etc. Very powerful stuff all in VMWare Workstation 8. You can test all the HA, vMotion, fautlt tolerance, liveMigration, etc...For shared storage, there are also many options such as MS iScsi target, OpenFiler, etc...
Google it...many tutorials on how to set this up. -
