Cisco 3550 iOS

alliasneoalliasneo Member Posts: 186
Hey guys, I was looking at buying a Cisco 3550 but it's the SMI iOS version. Which I understand can't do OSPF amongst other things.*If I contacted Cisco and asked them if I could download the EMI version for just my home lab and study purposes what do u think my chances are?I don't want to buy this 3550 if it's not got the full capabilities...

If you sign up for a free CCO guest account with Cisco, that level of access allows you to download most of the IOS for access layer switches. That should include the ipservices IOS for the 3550.

Update: Just checked my guest login, I have access to 3550, 3560, 3750 ipbase and ipservices. So there should be no problems.

wsc-3550 has announced an EOL/EOS 2 years ago. I went to cisco site and downloaded the emi software. If they do not want you to have it, the link is not selectable unless you have a service contract. Just get it at cisco ,com for free

For free only with a service contract , does that mean the service contract is also free?.

It's also difficult getting a service contract for something that's End of Service(EOS).

I believe Cisco can charge you after you download an IOS image if you are not authorized to use that image. However, I've never heard of this actually happening to anyone...I could be wrong on that, but I'm pretty sure that is their official policy regarding downloading IOS images. I wouldn't chance it on my CCO account, and these images are easy to find if you know how to use Google search.

I wish Cisco had a policy to help us home lab builders, but their policy seems to pretend we don't exist. My guess is it's so they don't inadvertently create a legal loophole corporations could abuse in order to avoid paying for things they should, but it sure does put the honest home lab builder in a confusing situation!

hmmm so are the actual switch ios images off cisco actually free then? I remember getting them years back for 3550 but then today went on there to have a look at 3750 and you have to tick all these agreement boxes. Didnt use to have to do that

Yes, using a guest account the switch IOS are free...as long as you are not after any specialised higher end images like 3750X, 4500R, 6509. For those your mileage will vary depending on the image you are after. But you still have to tick the agreement boxes, but thats no biggie.

awesome! as a side note, I know you can upgrade the 3550 SMI to the EMI image as i did this a while back. Does the same thing apply to the 3560 and 3750 ipbase to ipservices upgrade?

I just upgraded some 3560's to the new version with crypto. No issues once I got the right IOS image from Cisco.

    NO,

They are not free; by downloading them you agree that you have purchased an enterprise (ipservices) switch model. In the newer models such as the 3750X its the same image for lan base / ip services but you have to purchase codes to "unlock" the ipservices (if you specify at time of ordering they will unlock per factory as well as any modules you order will be installed for you). The ipservices image is almost $8,000 at "stock price" and even though you can get it and implement it for free you better pray you never (or your company if your using company account) gets audited.

Call a Cisco rep and ask them why there was such a price difference in the 3750-48PS-L vs 3750-48PS-E.

To the OP they do have a select few free ios's just have to do some digging around on the cisco release list. Not to sure if they have the emi image for free though but if you are resourceful you can find it in the almighty cloud.. ;)
