I can't say that anyone has checked mine, but why lie? If the issue is that the major isn't applicable to the job in question, rest assured there are plenty of people who have degrees with majors that don't apply to where they work. Kind of silly to lie about that.

My about-to-be employer checked mine, even though I didn't provide a GPA. Do not lie about this. It's not worth the risk.

I'm familiar with only Verifications Inc. and they don't specifically go through and see what you majored in, however they do verify you attended and what degree, if any, you obtained as listed on your application. NEVER LIE ON A JOB APPLICATION. IT WILL COME UP AND BITE YOU IN THE REAR LATER.

When I worked for the City they checked me harder than DOD did lol. They discovered I had not "graduated" high school. Problem was back in 1989 I forgot to return a library book and they withheld my diploma until I returned it. Which I did a week after graduation. Guess they never marked me down as "graduating"....

Anyways flash forward to 2004 I had to fax a copy of my high school diploma to Baltimore County School system to get that corrected.....

Tell your "friend" that lying is lying. It'll bite him in the behind very quickly. A computer science major involves a lot more programming and math while information systems involves more network and administration.

Having said that, I accidentally lied on my resume. My school decided to change the name of the major just before I received my diploma.

I put the original one on my resume when I found out I was done and I had to wait 3 months for it.

No wonder I never got called. SOB

Mrs. Z just took a job as a consultant. As part of the application process, they had some form to verify her college credentials.

Most organizations outsource their verification process to a third-party.

I just recently got sent an e-mail from a contract employer asking for my graduate school ID number to request official transcripts which they will pay for.

So yeah, they check to see if you have the educational credentials you claim you have.

I've only had the State and Federal government actually verify my information. That being said, most places just want a degree so why bother lying? My last company fired two people because they lied about degrees they didn't have. It was a shame because the one guy was actually really good at his job, but lie about one thing and what else will you lie about?

Looks like you've been caught red handed by Iristheangel (good find, by the way). I've had my degree verified by the school district I used to work for. They even called my college to confirm. I currently live in the US and I have a UK degree, so they wanted to make sure I wasn't lying.

Also, while I was being interviewed for my current role they researched my degree and asked me questions about my classes from the degree program. Now, if your 'friend' had something like "degree in computer science from xyz" then 'he' may become very stuck when those questions are asked in an interview. Now, if you do get those questions wrong (oops, I meant your 'friend') you can't get angry at the interviewer for trying to ask questions - if you lie about something, you deserve to look like a fool.

Ok - quick semi-related question... I was just looking at my school's list of offered majors and found out that my major has had a name change since I graduated... should I include the name of the new major on my resume, or just keep the old name?

Why not just put down the degree you obtained? All this major stuff makes no sense to me.
