VTP for the first Time

Hi I've been reading up on vtp and vlans and assumed I had it all figured out,
So I went to configure it on my 2 switches 2900,
First switch I configured as a server, all went fine created 3 vlans and assigned the ports
I then connected my other switch, as a client, same domain, lower revision and I expected my vlans I created in the first switch to just appear in a show vlan command.
But they don't is there more to it?? I have set the trunk links also,
Any help would be great.
Oh another thing worth mentioning is if I try to assign a switch port to a vlan "with the command: switchport access vlan 2" the port does not show in show vlan command at all (no longer in the native)
