I have two routers one with version 11.2 and another with 12.1. I was wondering if there is a way to copy the 12.1 version IOS and install it on the other router so they could both use 12.1

yes, especially when the routers are the same and the target flash can hold the newer version.

You'll need to setup a TFTP server, i.e. on a client PC so you can backup the images to disk while your at it.

Some free TFTP servers (i.e. for Windows XP) are listed here:

Use show flash command on both routers to check for space and files names, and perhaps other stored images.

use command copy flash tftp on the source router (with the 12.1) and transfer the image to your TFTP server

use command copy tftp flash on the target router to copy the image from the TFTP server (11.2).

May sounds complicated at first but it isn't. Use our site or forum search option for more info and some experience from others. The above is basically the process, but for a detailed step-by-step instruction check the www.cisco.com site, i.e. the instructions for 2500 routers is here.

As long as they are the same platform, cant transfer IOS between say a 2500 series and a 2600 series.
