So I got my transfer evaluation today from WGU... Im a bit disappointed...

icon_redface.gificon_redface.gif

So I only got 28 credits transferred in to WGU from previous college experience. and I have a bout 92 credits left to graduate. Im pretty annoyed at myself that i didn't transfer in more certs.. I do not want to be in school 3 1/2 years. icon_sad.gificon_redface.gif

icon_study.gif should i take a few more certs before my start date. I think i should knock a+, cow associate, web fundamentals MTA..

It depends on when you start and your cash flow IMO. If you start in Sep 1st thats a lot of material to cruz through even if you know them. Plus the cost of the tests coming out of your pocket. You can always request a reevaluation of your transfer if you think that they missed something. They did when I xfered in and I had to get it corrected.

What is projected is June of 2014 or something like that but I am trying to finish by next year so I can start some other stuff. I am doing the web tech class, its ok, web design is not an interest of mine but the material is good.

92 credits? If you are good at studying for certifications that can be done in 4 terms. If you knockout A+, Net+ and a Microsoft cert + 2 classes in 6 months thats 24 credits right there and hardly a challenge imo. During my undergrad I always tried to break things down in to 3 7 week blocks, in each block I would try to knock out one class and one cert. In the beginning I could do both within 3 weeks for the easier ones.

The beauty of WGU is - you determine how fast you go.

My situation is like yours as far as transfer in credits. I transfered in 27. I work full time, have a family, house, all that jazz. Am I spending my weekends rebuilding my deck, fence...No. Am I neglecting my wife and daughter? No. What I am doing is busting my arse. Hobbies are all gone, it's all about school. I've done 35 cus and after Tuesday, I'm looking at 42 cus completed in 3 months. When i started, I was planning on taking 3-4 terms. The rate I'm going, I'll be done in little more than 1 term (8-9 months).

Everyone's situation is different. If you can't devote the time, then you can't. But, if you can...and that there is the beauty of WGU.

I personally wouldn't do the certs on my own dime. I'd study like crazy for them though. There's nothing to stop you from learning all the material and knocking a bunch of classes out as soon as you start.

Totally agree. I was able to do 76 CUs in my one and only term with WGU. I went in with dual associate degrees and some certs.

Doing certs on your own dime does make financial sense if you do not have to pay for study materials unless you get a crazy amount of CUs done each term.

If we figure the average student does 30cu's a term (very generous imo) and the average certification costs $200 and gets you 6 cu's.

Each certification represents 1/5th of your term. Your term costs $3,000. So that Cert costs you $600 but you could have gotten it for $200 on your own.

I would agree with you if the person doesn't do any self-study before enrolling. What I'm saying is learn the material before, take the test ASAP once you are enrolled. Why spend $200 for the exam when you can let WGU pay for it? Day one, request voucher, can have test scheduled within a week, but during that time moved onto the next class.

I already have network+ and im studying for 70-680 on my own. probably will take that on my own dime. I understand what you are saying tho. Im hoping to knock a+ pretty quickly too.

I transferred in I think 21 CU, ended up finishing everything in 1 year 4 months to the day. I second the option of studying for a cert or two before your start date and requesting the voucher on day 1. Good luck with it! I start my MS on the 1st of Sept. and i'm currently studying for one of the certs now as well.

You could probably knock all of those out in the remaining months of summer, and then start school in the fall. I went to a local community college, and tested out of 1/3 of my degree doing this icon_cool.gif
Goals for 2018: MCSA: Cloud Platform, AWS Solutions Architect, MCSA : Server 2016, MCSE: Messaging

If it matters, I transferred in 28 CUs also (out of about 45-50) and I completed WGU in 1.5 years. Probably could have done a year, but I tend to have a lot going on, so I didn't want to kill myself.

    You'll be fine.

Some more complex certs may take months to complete, extending your term(s) and costing you more money in the end. Keep that in mind. icon_wink.gif
