It took longer than I wanted, but I knocked out chapters 20 and 21, finishing the book. I also purchased access to CBT Nuggets videos. Next step:

    1. Refine my notes
    2. Watch one video per day of CBT Nuggets, and read its corresponding chapter in the book
    3. Lab

Hopefully within the next 30 days I'll be prepared to sit for the exam

Did you find the ACS evual version? Im trying to download it without luck... Yes, I noted the licensing paragraph in the book :P

No, I wasn't able to find anything. I'm not too worried about it, at worst I'll just memorize the paths to certain functions without labbing.

CBT Nuggets has officially released 640-554 training videos. Just bought my access icon_cool.gif

How do you like the CBT Nuggets training so far? I'm thinking about getting it, but I really like Chris Bryant's teaching. Chris Bryant's is not coming out till end of year. Might be helpful that Keith Barker helped write the OCG and is teaching the CBT Nuggets though..
  • YFZbluYFZblu Member Posts: 1,462 ■■■■■■■■□□
^ I actually really like it. But I'm not a huge fan of Chris Bryant either. A little too dry for my taste.
  • RoguetadhgRoguetadhg Member Posts: 2,489 ■■■■■■■■□□
Yeah, I realized that Keith was the person behind the reading after I seen an example with his first name on it.

Keith has a good sound to him. Although, I didn't listen to anything past 2 minutes of any of the videos :P

I never thought someone could sound MORE excited than Jeremy Cioara to talk about networking, but Keith pulls it off - Sometimes I'm cracking up at how giddy he sounds. Not in a bad way, I appreciate it. I feel the same way sometimes!

Looks like I will be buying CBT Nuggets training.
  • RoguetadhgRoguetadhg Member Posts: 2,489 ■■■■■■■■□□
Having someone being excited about it helps a lot. It's like a virus, and a must for teaching. Although, I can't find where I can purchase the videos and keep them. I like to keep my videos to watch :D I dislike streaming.

So I watched the first CBT Nuggets video and realized - They start with Network Foundation Protection (NFP), and completely skip the concepts from the first 50 pages of the Official Cert Guide.

I also finished reading chapter 1 and started my 2nd pass-through of this book.

Arrrr! I trying to catch up to ye., YFZblu. I don't want you to slow down though :)

Read chapter 2 - More security generalities, but still good information. Tomorrow I'll read chapter three (its like three pages) and then chapter four, which is Network Foundation Protection (NFP). At that point I'll be caught up with the first CBT Nuggets video, which I may rewatch as well before moving on to video number 2.
  • YFZbluYFZblu Member Posts: 1,462 ■■■■■■■■□□
Read chapters three and four again today, which got me caught up with the CBT Nuggets, starting at Network Foundation Protection. That CBT Nuggets material is not messing around! In the first video Keith Barker uses CLI to configure class maps and policy maps, and implements them. He does mention not to worry about the syntax of these configs via CLI - Which makes me wonder if this exam will be chock-full of CCP and ACS configuration instead.
  • RoguetadhgRoguetadhg Member Posts: 2,489 ■■■■■■■■□□
The book has a lot of CCP, which makes me think it's going to be something for CCP on the exam. Unlike SDM which was a small couple pages.

Re-read chapter five, and refined my notes. I now have five categories of note cards: CCP, ACS, ASDM, General, and CLI

Currently reading chapter six, 'Securing the Management Plane'. Later tonight I will watch the CBT Nuggets video for 'Implementing AAA using Cisco IOS and ACS Server', and probably get to chapter 7 in the book tomorrow.

Also, my ASA 5505 is scheduled to arrive tomorrow - Pretty pumped about it :D

ASA 5505 has arrived :) My first piece of brand new Cisco gear. Because I'm a nerd, I took pictures:

Congrats, I opened a new ASA 5505 up two weeks ago. You're probably all excited, that new toy smell. Don't look it like $300-$500 gone but an investment in yourself. Good luck in your pursuit of the security cert.

You're definitely investing the time and work to ensure you learn the material and pass the exam unlike some people (myself, I basically crammed the Netacad material, did like four chapters of labs and called it a day, which might explain my low passing score).
  • YFZbluYFZblu Member Posts: 1,462 ■■■■■■■■□□
    Thanks!

It's funny you mention the smell, because I was literally smelling it. My wife made sure I knew how ridiculous I looked, too!

Re-read Chapter 6, and I watched / labbed with CBT Nuggets as it got into AAA using IOS and the ACS Server (TACACS+/RADIUS).

I'm leaving for Chicago tomorrow, just an overnight vacation thing with friends who live up there, so I won't be studying at all again until Sunday.

YFZblu, you had to post the pics too?? Great now I'm even more jealous.. lol.

Great purchase though. I have the ASA 5505 on my future shopping list.. Looks like you're taking care of business!

Are you using an eval copy of ACS 5.3 or using a free TACAS solution?
  • SecurityThroughObscuritySecurityThroughObscurity Member Posts: 212 ■■■□□□□□□□
by the way I did not get any ASA labs on exam, just CCP.
You should know how to configure ACLs, NAT, NTP, ZFW, C3PL, etc (with CCP).

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

I decided to install VirtualBox with Windows Server on it, and run a free TACACS solution.

Sorry to ask, but what was the free solution you used? I have ran accross 2 free ones and both seem kind of clumsy.

    Thanks in adv.

No need to be sorry! I'll get you the name when I get home. I toyed with it for a few hours this morning, and realized the TACACS+ solution I chose requires me to enter user accounts into XML files, which is really annoying......So I'm not sure if I'll spend too much time on this.
